What causes it?

Although the exact causes are unknown, hypertension is classified into two types. Primary hypertension develops gradually and is most likely the result of;

  • a sedentary lifestyle
  • a poor diet
  • stress
  • being over 50

Secondary hypertension can be the result of health problems or certain medications. Below is what may cause it;

  • family history
  • high salt intake
  • smoking
  • obesity
  • lack of exercise
  • overconsumption of alcohol
  • stress
  • being over 50
  • diabetes
  • kidney problems
  • sleep apnoea
  • thyroid/adrenal gland problems
  • birth control pills

Foods to reduce
